South Carolina Fact Sheet

The 2001 Kids Count Data Book, a state-by-state study which reports on the well being of America's children, ranks South Carolina 42nd among all states. This is South Carolina's best ranking ever, having ranked 48th in 1997 and 1998.For the 10 indicators measured in the data book, the well being of South Carolina's children deteriorated in three areas and improved in seven between 1990 and 1998. Highlights include:

Infant Mortality Declined while Low Birthweight Rose
From 1990 to 1998 the infant mortality rate declined by 18%, but the low birthweight rate increased by 9%. South Carolina ranks 48th and 47th respectively on these indicators.

Child and Teen Death Rates Decline
From 1990 to 1998 the death rate declined by 24% for children ages 1-14 and by 13% for teens ages 15-19. South Carolina ranks 36th and 33rd respectively for child and teen deaths.

Teen Birthrate Declines
From 1990 to 1998 the teen birthrate declined by 15%, but South Carolina ranks 42nd.

More Parents Employed Full-time, but Poverty Not Improved
The percent of children with parents not employed full-time all year declined from 30% to 24% during 1990 to 1998; South Carolina ranks 18th. However, the percentage of children in poverty increased from 21% in 1989 to 23% in 1997; South Carolina ranks 37th for child poverty.

More Children in Single-Parent Families
The percentage of all families with children that are headed by single parents increased from 25% in 1990 to 29% in 1998. South Carolina ranks 40th.
